Clean with Care to Spare Yourself from Back Pain

With the spring season here, everyone has one thing on his or her mind, SPRING CLEANING! What many people may not realize is that lower back injuries are extremely common during this time due to all the reaching and bending involved with cleaning. Activities such as, vacuuming rugs, cleaning floors, yard work, and lifting heavy objects, can all lead to a risk of lower back strain/injury. But cleaning shouldn’t be back breaking!

Prevention is Key

There are a few ways you can prevent unwanted lower back problems this spring. When lifting heavy boxes, bend your knees rather then your waist. You want your legs to do most of work while performing this task. This will take all the pressure and strain off your lower back.

Chiropractic Can Help

If you do run into lower back pain/injuries during your spring-clean, Smith Chiropractic is here to help offer relief. Through a series of simple chiropractic adjustments, we can correct spinal misalignments and save you a lot of pain down the road. We can also help keep your lower back happy and healthy throughout the year with preventative routine adjustments.

Hope everyone has a happy and healthy week! We invite you to visit Smith Chiropractic Family Care and Sports Injury Center. We will be back next week with another useful wellness tip.

The Growing Problem of Hunched-Over Laptop Syndrome

The average person uses a computer, typically a laptop, on a daily basis for several hours, whether is it viewing work e-mails, staying up-to-date with news, and even communicating with friends and family on social media platforms. In one study, it was found that people between the ages of 16 and 24 spend about 27 hours a week viewing the Internet from their laptops. Could you be a victim from H.O.L.S. (Hunched-Over Laptop Syndrome) and not even know it? When you constantly look down at your laptop screen, you are putting tension on your neck’s muscular and skeletal structures. After an hour or so, the muscles become burdened with excess load and thus get strained. Over time, you can develop neck issues such as cervical muscle strains, loss of normal cervical curve, misalignment/subluxation of the neck and mid-back vertebrae and even herniated cervical discs from H.O.L.S. Yikes!

A Simple Solution

The solution to H.O.L.S. is similar to the one we gave you about the Text Neck Syndrome. Your laptop screen needs to be near eye-level distance to protect your neck from excessive neck flexion and unwanted tension and pain. Try stacking books underneath your laptop or buy a laptop stand. Once your laptop screen is raised closer to eye level, your neck will start to feel a whole lot better. Also, try to take mini-breaks and stretch every 30 minutes. Remember a tension-free neck is a happy and healthy neck!

Is All That Texting Giving You a Sore Thumb?

Texting has become one of the most popular means of communicating in today’s techno savvy world. In a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, it was found that Americans between the ages of 18 to 24 sent an average of 110 texts per day. That’s insane! While you are typing out all those messages, you are putting unfavorable tension and pressure on your thumbs. Over time, continuous use of your thumbs for texting can lead to painful tendonitis, which is inflammation of the tendons, and you can develop premature arthritis. That sounds like a problem that no one wants!

Lucky, we have a solution that will help mitigate the tension and pain that can happen in your thumbs due to texting. It’s a simple stretching exercise. Take a rubber band and wrap it around your thumb and index finger. Next, move your thumb and index finger in opposite directions from one another, hold for 3 seconds and then bring your thumb and index finger back together. It is recommended to perform this movement for about 20 repetitions. By doing this exercise, you will stretch overworked muscles thus protecting your thumbs from unwanted problems and complications due to constant texting.

In addition to addressing spinal health, chiropractic adjustments can help restore function and provide relief for a number of misalignment issues that occur between the 27 bones of the wrist/hand. If you experience thumb pain due to excessive texting or any pain in your hand/wrist, chiropractic care can be an effective method of correcting the cause of your pain and preventing future problems.

Hope everyone has a happy and healthy week! Remember to stop by Smith Chiropractic Family Care and Sports Injury Center. We will be back next week with another important health & technology tip.
